MACEDO VITORINO is very pleased to announce that it has published its first newsletter using an artificial intelligence tool developed in collaboration with the legal tech startup Key Terms Software using ChatGPT from OpenAI.

The newsletter was first drafted by the Key Terms AI assistant deployed as a Microsoft Word add-in. The text was then reviewed by three lawyers. The total time spent in preparing the news was 60 minutes, including the application of the prompt and the review by three human lawyers. The same work done only by a human would take at least 1 hour and 40 minutes. Productivity gains were 40% in a task of low technical difficulty, although with an overuse of human resources due to the experimental nature of the project. When in full production, time savings will exceed 50% for low complexity tasks and 20 to 30% for higher complexity tasks.

The AI assistant's response contained some errors, particularly in its understanding of the rationale behind this type of law. This lack of understanding led the AI assistant to misinterpret the function of the law generating a wrong output that was corrected by the human lawyers in the loop. To fully grasp the effects of this type of law, the system needed additional information that was not provided, but which legal professionals with basic legal training easily incorporate in their analysis.

This newsletter is the first work product of the HaiLE project, which stands for "Human in the loop AI Legal Experiment", developed in collaboration by MACEDO VITORINO and Key Terms. The purpose of HaiLE is to create AI tools for lawyers and legal professionals.

"We are thrilled about embarking on this first project using AI. This is just a small step that marks the beginning of a long journey" stated António Vitorino, the partner at MACEDO VITORINO overseeing the project. "MACEDO VITORINO has been investing in artificial intelligence for several years; our goal is to spearhead the advancement of legal technology and the integration of AI within the field of law, recognising the essential role of lawyers and other legal professionals in advancing the use of AI" António Vitorino added.

The newsletter we are now publishing clearly states that it was created using AI. We are committed to using AI tools responsibly and transparently and promise to inform our clients and readers about any other publications that we create using AI technology.
